One of the most popular sights of Israel is Masada fortress. It is situated in the south-western part of the country. In 25 B.C. the king Herod built a fortress at the top of one of the hills of the Jewish Desert, rising 450 m above the Dead Sea. The fortress is surrounded by the cliffs from the all sides. There are powerful walls at the top, where 37 towers are arranged. Some palaces, synagogue and auxiliary buildings were built at the top of the hill. Those palaces remained luxurious Roman villas. The Northern Palace which overhangs above the abyss still impresses from the distance. Of course, there are only the ruins had left from these majestic constructions after 2000 years passed. The visitors of Masada can take a guide tour to the ruins of the fortress, visit the impressive complex of buildings and see the fully preserved system of the Roman siege (camps, blockade wall and a mound).
In the ancient Israel, in the year 72, after 2 years from Tit had captured Jerusalem and ruined a temple, Roman troops tried to capture the fortress. They established a long siege, hoping that the besieged people would surrender, unable to bear a thirst and a hunger. There were from 10 to 15 thousand people in the camp of Silva, while at Masada were only 967 besieged people, including men, women and children. The siege had been continuing for a few months, during which Romans tried to make a mound on the western slope. The legionnaires used the siege machines and were getting ahead under the cover of arrows and stones. After 7 months of the siege the Romans made a gap in the wall. It determined the fate of the besieged fortress Masada and led the Jews to take their last terrible decision. One of the walls was damaged and the besieged Jews built the new one earth wall with the wooden fixing. But when the Romans fired the eastern constructing, the Jewish warriors realized that it was impossible to leave the fortress. They decided to withdraw from life on their own to not to be captive. The defenders of Masada committed a ritual suicide, 10 warriors of them killed all the women and children, then men, then one of them had to kill other 9 warriors by lot and in the end he killed himself.
The tragic events of the fortress in Jewish Israel during those days had converted Masada into a symbol of Jewish heroism and not at least a symbol of the struggle of any people for freedom and independence. According to the UNESCO decision, Masada is in the list of the world’s history gems which are under the protection of the international community. Nowadays, Masada is one of the most popular tourist sites in the world.
